Research Profile
Dr. Al's research investigates the role of bacteria and the human microbiome in urologic health and disease. Her work focuses on understanding how microbial communities influence kidney stone disease, urinary tract infections, urologic cancers, and more. Rather than studying organs or microbes in isolation, her research considers the human host and its resident microbial communities as an integrated biological system to better understand disease development, progression, recurrence, and treatment response. Her research integrates bacteriology, next-generation sequencing, bioinformatics, clinical trials, and experimental in vitro and in vivo models to identify mechanisms of host–microbe interactions and develop microbiome-based approaches to improve patient care.
